Admission and specific prerequisites
The examiner is not a decision-maker regarding admission to the course. If the examiner is contacted by a student who wants to get some form of exemption to be admitted to the course, the examiner must refer to the education office within the school's operational support.
Specific prerequisites
Requirements for specific prerequisites for admission to a course are expressed in the course syllabus for each course. The only case where an examiner is mentioned in connection with specific prerequisites in KTH's governing documents is for the degree project. The examiner for the degree project is responsible for checking that the student meets the specific prerequisites as stated in the course syllabus. What should be checked by the examiner themself depends on what support is given.
Example: If the specific prerequisites are Passed courses at second cycle level of at least 60 credits, including courses that are relevant for the degree project including a course in theory of knowledge and research methodology and an educational administrator checks the credit requirement and that a course in theory of knowledge and research methodology is approved, then the examiner only should check that the student has passed courses that are relevant for the degree project. The examiner then will needs to familiarize themself with which courses are required to carry out the thesis project and check that the student has passed these courses or has equivalent knowledge. |
Also for other first and second cycle courses, it may happen that the educational administration turns to the examiner to check specific prerequisites for students where it is not obvious that the requirements are met. A student can fulfill the specific prerequisites by having the corresponding knowledge, and this can be difficult for an automated eligibility checking system or an educational administrator to determine.
Exemption from meeting the specific prerequisites
KTH's delegation order states that the school's faculty board can decide to make exceptions from meeting the specific prerequisites for first and second cycle education and that the faculty board may further delegate this to the director of first and second cycle education (GA), which is normally done. The examiner, on the other hand, may not grant a student an exemption from meeting the specific prerequisites. This can only be done by the faculty board/GA.
