Strategy for assessment of equal value: inclusive assessment
The simplest strategy for assessment of equal value is to make the assessment inclusive, so that it works for everyone or as many students as possible, without any adaptations.
An example of this is to hold exams during the day, Monday-Friday, so that parents can more easily participate. KTH has a regulation concerning this in the Guideline on the arrangement and planning of the academic year (link to the guideline in Swedish), which says:
Teaching and examinations are held primarily on weekdays at 8:00-17:00. |
Keep in mind that many students have adapted assessment with the right to sit 50% longer when writing. In order for the writing time to not become unreasonably long and late for students with 50% extra time, it is appropriate that the regular writing time be limited so that also assessments with extended writing time fall within the time interval 8:00-17:00.
What is an inclusive deadline time for hand-in of assignments? From October 31, 2022, the default due time for Canvas assignments is 19:00 (before, it was 23:59). The time 19:00 is chosen to encourage students to work during the day, and those who have classes until 17:00 will have time to go home and submit the submission after classes. This is of help, in addition to students who are parents, to students who have problems with procrastination and who, if the deadline was 23:59, would have stayed up and worked on the assignment until midnight. Students who prefer to work late at night can still do so if the deadline is 19:00, but in the evenings before the deadline. Unless there are specific pedagogical reasons to use another time, you are recommended to use 19:00 during a weekday as due time for your assignments.
Another example of inclusive examination is to give plenty of time for assignments, i.e. between the time the assignment is published (provided that the students then have the necessary knowledge to perform the assignment) and the deadline for submission. If there is enough time, the student who has dyslexia, or for other reasons needs plenty of time to read and absorb text, does not need to apply for extra time.
Another example of inclusive assessment is accessibility-adapted assessment tasks, lab instructions, etc.
