Playing around with GPT-3

GPT-3, since its release in May 2020, has been amazing people with its capabilities. In this seminar we want you to explore these capabilities, and perhaps some of its limitations, via the GPT-3 beta API available at Welcome to OpenAI beta Links to an external site.

Getting Started:
To use GPT-3 you will have to sign-up. Instructions are available here Quickstart Links to an external site.. You can also start getting GPT-3 to write your essays for you via Playground Links to an external site.

Once you have gotten up and running we would like you to first explore  GPT-3 and its capabilities and generally get a feel for how well it runs by playing around with its functionality.

What you should do before the seminar

  • Check the schedule for the Period 2 seminars at Schedule for Seminars
  • Keep a record of group whose seminar's date and time suits you
  • Before Mon, Nov 14, 17:00 - Join that Group in "Period 2, Seminar Groups" in People
  • Note there is a limit on the number of students per group so please join early to ensure you get a suitable timeslot for you.

What you should do for the seminar

For the seminar please come with a couple of fun/interesting examples you obtained with

  • question and answering
  • having a conversation with yourself
  •  accessing the general knowledge it has obtained from the web, for example does it know anything about you or KTH...
  • etc...

What you should submit:

Each person should submit the following before the seminar

  • A 800 word essay based on a topic of interest to you (with, of course, some discretion applied). You should create this essay by only using prompts to GPT-3. One example would be "How GPT-3 will be used in the coming 1-5 years". I would like you to get GPT-3 to actually write the essay but you may have to do some prompt gymnastics, also known as prompt engineering, such as using different prompts for different sections of the essay to create a consistent and coherent argument and reasoning throughout. Please do your best to create a reasonable sounding essay. If you fail that is fine but please make a reasonable attempt so you have something meaningful to say in the second part of the assignment.

  • Then, without the help of GPT-3, you should write at least a half page to summarize what you did, sum up your experience of exploiting GPT-3 to create content for you and an appraisal of the results.

If I cannot attend a seminar:

If you cannot attend a seminar,

  • You should complete the main assignment.
  • Explicitly write down your 3 fun/interesting examples
  • After reading about the submitted assignments from the other members of the group, you should write another 800 word essay  (without the help of GPT-3) addressing the question "Will students be using  GPT-3 to write their homework essays in the coming 1-5 years?".
