The following excerpt is a translation from the prefaces of Leonard Euler's "Institutiones calculi differentialis" (1755).
What is the definition of "function" given in this text, and how does it compare to earlier and later notions? To what extent does the given example from ballistics make a new understanding of the concept of function necessary? Are there other questions studied around that time for which the traditional notion of functions was insufficient?
