Reflection document, period 2 2021/2022

  • Due 25 Nov 2021 by 18:00
  • Points 1
  • Available after 17 Nov 2021 at 12:00

Before you write your reflection you should do the preparations.

If you missed the study visit

If you missed the study visit you will need to do the following extra preparation for the seminar.

  • There are several business associations relevant to masters of computer science. Such organizations could either have  computer science companies or computer scientists as members. Find one (relevant) business association organizing companies (branschorganisation) and one organizing people. Look up the web sites of these associations and find some information about them. Then use them instead of the company, when you write your reflection. The reflection should be at least 700 words.

The written reflection

Write a reflection document where you address the following points based on your study visit and the preparations. Make sure that you bring up both positive and negative aspects. The document should be 500-1000 words.

  • Give a short description of the company and the visit. Did you learn anything new that you did not know before? Reflect upon why it was new to you.
  • (only for year 2) Compare what you learned from the study visit last year with this one.
  • What role does the company fill in society? Do you want to be part of what the company is doing? Reflect upon how important it is to you that the company you work for has values that you share.
  • How do IT companies find people to employ?
  • What do typical hiring processes look like? (Interviews, coding tests/challenges, personality tests, logical reasoning tests, etc.)
  • Reflect on how you can improve your chances to get an attractive job.
  • Finally, write a paragraph where you reflect on the courses you are currently taking and the courses (or degree project) that you have chosen to take next semester.

The document should be written as, or be converted to, a Google document. Set the permissions, so that everyone with the link will be allowed to comment the document. The following video shows how to do this:

If you do not want to use Google Docs for your text, there is an alternative described in the course memo.

Hand in the reflection

The link to your written reflection must be added to your group's Canvas page for this seminar before 18:00 on November 25. First, check that you are logged in to Canvas (in the grey Canvas menu to the left). You can find your group page by clicking Groups/Grupper in the grey Canvas menu to the left, choose your group (named prosamm group X), click on Pages/Sidor and the page named "period 2 2021/2022: Channels to find interesting jobs". Then edit this page, adding a line consisting of your name and course offering (prosamm21 or prosamm20) at the end of the document, and make this line link to your Google document by using the chain icon and entering the URL of the Google document. Then save the page. Be careful not to change or remove anything on the page that anyone else has written.

(If you cannot find your group in Canvas, please email Viggo Kann <viggo@kth.se> to get a group.)

You will also need to read and comment on the other group members' reflections.

Have you missed anything in this course?

If you look at your results in Grades/Omdömen in Canvas you should have "1" for each of the three tasks for each seminar: reflection document, comments and seminar, in order to pass the course. (For prosamm20, the results from 2020/2021 can be found in the old course room.) If you missed anything, you will need to read the instructions on how to fix this. If a result has not been reported correctly, you should contact your mentor for that seminar.
