Introduction

LEGO Element Drawing Library is a database of technical drawings created by Mark Lange. These drawings describe the functional shape of LEGO elements. Please note that this means that these drawings are not manufacturing drawings!

In some cases the modeling of the LEGO elements have been simplified significantly in order to better illustrate the features needed for a function. However, these detail drawings can be used to guide you in the modeling of LEGO elements used to build machines that are studied in various CAD and project courses at KTH Södertälje.

Description

The library is organized according the LEGO element classes shown in the table below, which is derived from research into the LEGO hobby community. Each of the classes are linked to a module (i.e., click on the text label in the table cell and you will go directly to the module in this website), which has its own thumbnail page (i.e., click on the image in the table cell and you will go directly to the thumbnail page in the module).

In the module you will find a list of different types of documentation available that describes then LEGO element, which includes, Modeling Tutorials, Detail Drawings and Element Color Codes.

Please note that there are in fact several modules of brick classifications that are not linked from the Index Table!

When you are accessing the Thumbnail page in a Module, you will be able to follow the hyperlins to other pages that give you more information about the LEGO Element that is shown.

Figure 3

Figure 3 : The label of the thumbnail will show you a detail drawing of the LEGO Element, the image will send you to a page of available color codes and there can be a downloadable Creo Parametric model.

Please note that these are not all the Color Codes available from the LEGO Group, but only those colored LEGO Elements that have been created this project IPU : LEGO Element Drawing Library.

Method

There is a tutorial page that describes in more depth the classification of LEGO Elements found in this library, which is found by following this link;

Conclusion

The technical drawings cannot be used to manufacture LEGO elements, because most of the dimensions used to describe the shapes are nominal values; if you manufactured LEGO elements from these drawings, the real world variations in tolerances on the nominal dimensions based on SS-ISO 2768-1 m would result in most of the elements not fitting together correctly. See this web page for a discussion of the actual manufacturing of LEGO Elements on Quora; What are the snap mechanism dimensions?

The library is being updated constantly with new drawings, tutorials, thumbnails, and links.

LEGO elements are documented using Creo Parametric (currently using Creo 7) and in many cases the part model files are available in Windchill (version 12).

I have only modeled the LEGO elements in my own collection. Yes, this means that I have a physical version of each LEGO ELement shown in this library in the specified colors.

I regularly use various third party hobby sites to help me in my identification and description of LEO elements.

  • BrickLink is owned by the LEGO Group.  www.bricklink.com
  • ReBrickable is where I document my collection. www.rebrickable.com.
  • Brickognize is what I use to find the Design ID of LEGO Elements. Brickognize is a service that searches the image database at BrickLink and returns the LEGO Element Design ID used by the LEGO Group. www.brickognize.com.

Afterword

I don't offer Swedish language versions of these pages because it requires too much maintenance. Someday, the language of these pages will automatically be translated according to the language you use in your browser.
