Seminar 7: Description

Rhythm tracking algorithms in sound (Monday 17 December, 15:00-17:00, in 1625).

This time, no guest.I will present some introduction, and we will also take some time to discuss projects.

Compulsory readings for the seminar are:

  1. Book that is valuable to get an overview of the MIR (Music Information Retrieval) perspective on music: Müller, Meinard. Download Fundamentals of music processing: Audio, analysis, algorithms, applications. Springer, 2015. Chapter 6.1 (p.303-306 until 6.1.1, 6.1.1-6.1.4 optional), 6.2 (pp.316-p.319, 6.2.2 and 6.2.3 optional), 6.3 (p.328-338), 6.4 (all).
  2. Seminal paper from the earlier years of MIR, which is probably the most-cited basis for beat tracking approaches: Scheirer, Eric D. " Download Tempo and beat analysis of acoustic musical signals." The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America 103, no. 1 (1998): 588-601.
  3. An example of our own work that combines probabilistic models and deep learning: Holzapfel, Andre, and Thomas Grill. " Download Bayesian meter tracking on learned signal representations." In ISMIR-International Conference on Music Information Retrieval, pp. 262-268. ISMIR, 2016.

Additional complementary readings:

Assignment:

  • Summarize the above readings in separate sections of one text. This summary may be short, and the goal is to serve as support for the seminar. Therefore, focus on the aspects you found most remarkable, or you had difficulties with.

Before the seminar, please upload the assignment to the discussion of the seminar.
