Seminar 4: Description
Rhythm and timing in speech (Thursday 22 November, 10:00-12:30, in 4618).
Our guest will be Zofia Malisz, postdoc in speech technology at TMH, KTH.
Readings for the seminar are:
Essential reading (for all of us):
- Turk, A., & Shattuck-Hufnagel, S. (2013). What is speech rhythm? Download What is speech rhythm? A commentary on Arvaniti and Rodriquez, Krivokapić, and Goswami and Leong. Laboratory Phonology, 4(1), 93-118.
- Cummins, F. (2009). Rhythm as an affordance for the entrainment of movement Download Rhythm as an affordance for the entrainment of movement. Phonetica, 66(1-2), 15-28.
In addition, each of us should read two of the texts below (or only Tilsen (2009), because of its length):
- Arvaniti, A. (2009). Rhythm, timing and the timing of rhythm Download Rhythm, timing and the timing of rhythm. Phonetica, 66(1-2), 46-63.
- Cummins, F. (2009). Rhythm as entrainment: The case of synchronous speech Download Rhythm as entrainment: The case of synchronous speech. Journal of Phonetics, 37(1), 16-28.
- Tilsen, S. (2009). Multitimescale dynamical interactions between speech rhythm and gesture Download Multitimescale dynamical interactions between speech rhythm and gesture. Cognitive science, 33(5), 839-879.

- Ding, N., Patel, A. D., Chen, L., Butler, H., Luo, C., & Poeppel, D. (2017). Temporal modulations in speech and music Download Temporal modulations in speech and music. Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews.

Download A role for amplitude modulation phase relationships in speech rhythm perception. The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 136(1), 366-381.
Assignment:
- Summarize your readings in separate sections of one text. This summary may be short, and the goal is to serve as support for the seminar. Therefore, focus on the aspects you found most remarkable, or you had difficulties with.
- Provide a short reflection (about one page) - informed by your reading - on what the characteristics of rhythm in speech are.
Before the seminar, please upload the assignment to the discussion of the seminar.
