The course allows the use of generative AI in project assignments under clearly stated conditions and terms based on the nature of the assignments. The use of generative AI is prohibited in the written exam. The use of generative AI for the project assignments is considered to promote learning and the fulfillment of the learning objectives.

In this course, students are allowed to critically use generative AI to support their learning. The use of generative AI is suggested in specific tasks of the two projects to assist in programming tasks. The students are required to interpret AI-generated outputs, and identify and correct potential AI errors, demonstrating their own understanding of the methods. This approach is intended to help students engage actively with the material, rather than simply reproducing AI-generated solutions, and to strengthen their ability to reason about and justify their work.

All use of AI must be clearly documented and motivated in the submitted work. Students must be able to explain any AI-generated code or text during project presentations. AI can be used to support coding and analysis in projects, but not to produce entire answers.

Permitted use of generative AI

The following list explains how generative AI may be used:

Translate code between programming languages (e.g., from R to Python) or to debug code.
Produce plots or simulation code, provided that the student can explain how it works.
Clarify theoretical concepts to aid the student's understanding.
Generate text that the student then edits and critically assesses.

More information can be found in the respective assignment.

Note! Remember to critically review material created by generative AI. You as a student are fully responsible for all material you submit and must be able to defend and explain it completely without support from generative AI.

Disclosure of AI use

To ensure academic transparency, you must disclose whether and how generative AI has been used in your work. The disclosure should be made in the written report, stating which AI tools were used and for which tasks. Students must indicate which parts of the text or code were generated with the help of generative AI, and how they modified or improved the AI output. Students are also encouraged to comment on any errors or limitations identified in the AI-generated answers.

Note! AI-generated references or quotes must be checked for accuracy and relevance.

Disciplinary action for unauthorized use of AI

Everything you submit must be your own work – even if generative AI is used as support, the thinking and conclusions must be your own. Using generative AI in an unauthorized way for examination and graded assignments is considered an attempt to mislead and may lead to disciplinary action. Therefore, be sure to follow the information on this page and what is specified in the assignments, and disclose your use of generative AI.
