Instructions and LEARNING SWEDISH COURSE

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

Swedish A1 for Engineers LS140N is an online self-study course in Swedish for beginners, where you study independently, but with regular contact with your teacher, mainly through your assignments, but also in voluntary seminars (highly recommended for a good result).

The course is divided into three parts, which correspond to the three modules of the online course Learning Swedish.

The easiest way to work with the material is to scroll down on the Modules page to Module 1. There you can start the course by working chapter by chapter towards the Test.

COURSE MATERIAL

Learning Swedish is an online course from the Swedish Institute designed to give you basic spoken and written knowledge of Swedish as well as insights to the Swedish culture and society.

Each module has many chapters. How to work with the course content:

  • Read the Introduction to Learning Swedish so that you understand how the course works.
  • In Reference tools you find basic grammar, lists of phrases, och videos that you should return to throughout the course.
  • Study the material of each chapter, go through the chapters number by number, read the word lists, listen to the dialogues, do the quizzes.
  • When you have finished all chapters in one module (and all quizzes), do the language test, which also consists of many parts. Then do the Canvas assignment (a short task in writing), and wait for the teacher's response. The teacher will check your results on the Module's quizzes and language test and the Canvas assignment.
  • If you have a satisfactory result of the Module test, the quizzes, and the Canvas assignment, you can move on to the next Module. The teacher may ask you to complete a quiz or part of a test, or do them again.
  • After each Module, there will also be an oral Canvas-assignment that you record and upload (see below).

You complete the parts in the given order. You need to finish all three modules in Learning Swedish with a score of at least 80 %.

During the course, you will be part of a study group with four other students on the course. We recommend you to meet regularly IRL or online to collaborate with exercises and to speak Swedish with each other. The first student in the group is responsible to suggest the first day for your meeting.

ASSESSMENT

Oral assignments

There are three oral assignments, one after each Module. In these assignments, the focus is mainly on speech and pronunciation (separate sounds, intonation, etc.). Your teacher will give you feedback, and might ask you to practice more and resubmit your assignment.

Remember that you're not expected to submit perfect assignments without errors or assignments on a much higher level than A1. Your assignments are learning activities, where you learn by trial and error. Use the grammar and vocabulary that you've learned in Learning Swedish, and look up separate words in trustworthy dictionaries. Using automatic translation tools (for translating other than separate words/phrases) or letting someone else write your texts is considered cheating. If your teacher suspects cheating, you will be asked to explain how you wrote your text and/or write a new text.

You are always welcome to contact your teacher with questions, both while working on your assignments and after you have received feedback.

By the end of the course, there will be an oral test, where your basic conversation skills will be assessed.

ONLINE SEMINARS

The course starts with an online meeting, where you'll get a short introduction to the course and Learning Swedish, as well as an introduction to the basics of Swedish.

During the course, there are six online seminars, 90 minutes long, devoted to the different modules in Learning Swedish. All online meetings are recommended, however voluntary.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

To pass the course you need to:

  • finish all three modules + module tests in Learning Swedish with a score of at least 80 %
  • pass the three oral assignments
  • pass the test at the end of the course

DEADLINES

All assignments have deadlines, and it's important that you keep them. The deadlines are meant to help you plan your studies in a way that promotes your learning. Please note the dates in the beginning of the course, and plan your studies thoroughly! You are of course welcome to submit your assignments before the deadlines.

AFTER THE COURSE

When you have passed this course, you are eligible for the classroom course Swedish A2 for engineers.

The course book Rivstart A1/A2 (Lindemalm, Levy-Scherrer) is used on the classroom course Swedish A1 (chapter 1-10), as well as on Swedish A2. If you plan to continue on A2, it might be a good idea to get the book now.
