Under Swedish law, parents can stay home to look after their young children. Both parents have the right to do so. It’s called ‘parental leave’. While at home with their children they can receive ‘parental benefit’. This is money they get so they can stay home with the children instead of working, studying or looking for a job. You can get parental benefit for 480 days per child. Of these, 90 days are reserved for the mother only and 90 for the father. The parents can share the rest of the days as they like. Usually, it is the women who choose to stay home with the children when they are very young. But more and more men are staying at home with their children nowadays.
