When have you searched enough?

It might be difficult to know when you have searched enough. How can you be sure that you didn’t miss relevant sources? 
Searching the literature is an important part of your work with the thesis, but since your time is limited it is also important to decide when to stop.

Checklist for ensuring a thorough information search

  • Do you have enough sources to support your text?
  • Are the sources well chosen, or could you find better ones to serve your purpose?
  • Is your search broad enough to provide a comprehensive overview? Have you explored related topics?
  • Have you conducted your search in a structured, transparent, and reproducible manner to minimize subjectivity?
  • Do you meet the formal requirements regarding the number of references needed for your assignment or degree project?
  • Have you employed various search methods, such as using bibliographic databases (e.g., Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed), Google Scholar, and tracking citations both backward and forward?
