Seminars
Seminars
An important part of the course is formed by 10 mandatory seminars, which are held in groups of approximately 20 students (the groups are fixed during the course). Most seminar activities involve group assignments and discussions in smaller groups of 3-5 students.
Before each seminar, there is a written homework assignment with a deadline before the seminar. The
seminars build on the homework assignments, which means that you must hand in the homework in order to take part in the connected seminars. Make-up opportunities are scheduled twice during the course.
The seminars and homework assignments cover a range of topics, and sometimes form a complement to the lectures by addressing different course goals, such as academic writing and research methodology. Practicing academic writing as preparation for your master's thesis is a particularly important goal of the course, which is addressed mainly by the written homework and seminars.
Seminar groups
The course will be organized in twelve seminar groups (Seminar group 1-12); each group has a one hour (45 mins) seminar per week. Some seminar groups will be held online, and some physically at KTH depending on the preferences of students and seminar leaders. A survey will be published before the start of the course to find out student preferences. The group assignment for the seminars will be made available under People / Groups.
Please consult the schedule below for seminar dates and times, rooms, zoom links etc. Seminars always start 15 minutes after the hour. If you have a schedule conflict with another course you may swap groups with another student, or switch to another group. In that case, you must inform both seminar leaders in advance and get their permission!
- You will not be admitted if you have not prepared for the seminar by doing and submitting the homework before the seminar. In that case, attend the makeup seminar instead.
- In online seminars, you are required to attend on camera for the entire seminar for your attendance to be registered. If you know that you have a technical issue with your camera, please resolve it before the seminars start.
- You will not be admitted if you are more than five minutes late for the seminar.
Missing a seminar
If you miss a seminar, due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances, there will be a makeup opportunity in the exam week at the end of period 1 on Oct 16 (seminar 1-4) and one at the end of period 2 on Dec 19 (seminar 5-10). However, note that the homework is expected to be submitted by the ordinary deadline in all cases.
For the makeup seminars - please prepare as for the original seminar (review your homework for that session). Booking information for make-up seminars will be given in an Announcement.
If you have seminars left from another course round (2023 or earlier), please contact the course coordinator.
