Assessment - what to do to pass the course
Assessment
The course assessment consists of three components - three partial exams (quizzes, KON1), five laboratory assignments (LAB2) and a written exam (TEN3):
- KON1 - Partial exam, 1.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
-
LAB2 - Laboratory assignments (Labs 1a-b, 2, 3, 4), 4.0 credits, grade scale: P, F
-
TEN3 - Examination, 2.0 credits, grade scale: A, B, C, D, E, F
Starting from VT23, in order to pass the course (at least with grade E), it is necessary to
a) KON1: pass three theoretical quiz tests scheduled on specific dates (mandatory presence; passing threshold for every one of the three quizzes / partial exams corresponds to ca. 70% of available points in each quiz). Quizzes (partial exams) take place throughout the course duration on campus in computer labs with the support of Canvas platform.
b) LAB2: complete all laboratory assignments, and
c) TEN3: pass the final exam (passing threshold corresponds to 50% of available points), which takes place on campus.
So, at the end of the course you are expected to receive P for each one of 3 quizzes (partial exams, KON1), P for LAB2, i.e. pass each lab: present lab results to TA and submit a corresponding lab report in Canvas, and at least E for TEN3 (see below Grading criteria), and in consequence at least E for the entire course (see below Grading criteria).

Labs
The laboratory assignments are carried out in groups of three students whereas grading is on an individual basis.
For each lab presented and submitted up until the specified dates (so-called lab bonus dates), you will be awarded bonus points counted towards your final course grade (ca. 2% for every lab, provided that all the quizzes and the exam are passed). Each lab can also be presented/reported without any bonus points after bonus deadline in any of the available time slots. Bear in mind that labs in the course schedule represent opportunities for your group to present one of your lab assignments to a TA. So, you are expected to participate only in those lab sessions (time slots) that you find suitable to get your lab work approved.
Please see the website on Lab review for details on the form of lab assessment (how you present and report your work on assignments). Also, lab bonus points are not saved to forthcoming course rounds.
Complementing quizzes and examination
If you do not pass a quiz, there is an extra re-examination session, independently of the written exam, devoted solely to partial exams. You will only have to take re-exam for those quizzes that remain to be completed (passed).
Grading criteria
For the current course round, once the condition for passing the course are met (completed, reviewed labs, submitted lab reports and three passed quizzes), the following mapping between the exam score and the grade applies:
A: >=42, B: [37, 41], C: [32, 36], D: [27, 31], E: [23, 26], F: <23
This mapping is used to produce the exam grade as well as the final grade (corresponding to the exam score plus bonus points).
Opportunity to complete the requirements via supplementary examination
A passed individual lab assignment can be credited in later course offerings if the assignment is unchanged (bonus points for other lab assignments will be discarded).
Opportunity to raise an approved grade via renewed examination
If the examination/re-examination is taken in later course offerings, all bonus points will be discarded.
In this course all the regulations of the code of honor at the School of Electrical engineering and Computer science apply.
