This page contains KTH-specific information about your Master's thesis project.

There will be an information meeting about the degree project for all master students at KTH in September/October (date TBA).

Before you start

You and the supervisor need to fill out this form and submit it to Tilman Bauer (tilmanb@kth.se). The box concerning "delegating examiner" can be left blank. The course code is SF278X and the grading is Pass/Fail.

If you do your project at a company or abroad it is also important that you fill out this form.

When you are finished with the project:

The main outcome is a project report (master's thesis). You must present your thesis at a thesis seminar.

When the final version of the thesis is ready:

The advisor sends the final verson to gruadm@math.kth.se
This should be done at least one week before the presentation.
The presentation should be open to the public and announced (e.g., by posting it to the SMC Math Calendar) by the advisor. The advisor decides on the format of the presentation, after discussions with the student. There should always be time for questions from advisor, examiner, and audience. A 45-minute talk followed by 15 minutes of questions is a good choice.
Fill out this form: https://www.kth.se/form/diva-registration-mathematics

Examiner

The examiner must be a member of permanent faculty at the department of mathematics. Unless prohibited by this rule or other exceptional circumstances, the advisor will also be the examiner.
If the advisor cannot be examiner, then student and/or advisor should ask a permanent member of faculty at the math department to act as examiner. The examiner must be willing and able to judge the thesis and decide on passing or failing the student. They must be present at the public thesis seminar. This role cannot be delegated to the advisor, but the examiner is allowed to consult with the advisor.

Grading

The Master's thesis project will be graded on a P/F scale.

Usage of generative AI in degree projects

Unless a written agreement with the supervisor says otherwise,

the use of generative AI ("AI") is forbidden to generate text, data or code in the thesis. This includes also fragments, rephrasing, or translations.
the use of AI is forbidden to generate mathematical arguments, even if they are then rephrased by the student. (This would constitute plagiarism.)
the use of AI is permitted for formatting, correction of typos or grammar, and correction of LaTeX code.
AI may be used to generate feedback on one's own written text and for general discussions.

The student always bears full responsibility for the correctness, originality, and all other requirements on their thesis, whether or not AI was used or not. Disallowed use of AI can lead to disciplinary actions, whether it occured willfully or out of neglect.

If the supervisor and the student agree on a certain use of AI beyond the above, then all such use of AI must be made explicit in the thesis in detail.
