Information about seminars

At each seminar class a small quiz is given, followed by active work with seminar assignments.

Quiz:

The quiz can only be taken in the classroom during the seminar.  No books/notes/calculators allowed. You will need a mobile phone or laptop with access to Canvas in order to get the questions and submit the answers. There is a possibility of passing the test in the paper form (in particular cases, for example if you forgot the phone).

You have 20 minutes (30 minutes for students with extended writing time) to answer the questions.

Each of the six quizzes can give 2 points; the total amount of points earned at quizzes is divided by 2 and rounded up. This gives the number of bonus points for the exam. For example, 7 quiz points gives 4 bonus points.

If a student has at least 4 bonus points, then Part 1 of the Final exam is considered as passed. This student does not have to write Part 1, and can come directly to the Main part of the exam. Moreover, the bonus points are used as additional marks for the Main part of the final exam, see here.

Each quiz consists of two problems:

  • The first problem tests understanding of the basic concepts and statements of the course. It is given as a multiple answers question. This problem gives one point if the answer is completely correct, and 0 otherwise.

A good way of preparing to this part is to study the main definitions and statements of the course and illustrate them on particular examples. Discussion problems in the course book can be helpful.

  • The second problem includes a computational part. The correct answer gives 1p.

A good way of preparing to this type of questions is solving the recommended exercises (see the homepage).

A model quiz for the first module can be found here.

Work at the seminar:

The test is followed by a 15 minutes break. After that  you will get the answers and discuss the solutions of the quiz.

The main part of the seminar will be dedicated to solving more advanced problems from the same Module. One of the focuses here will lie on the written presentation of your solutions. This skill is essential for passing the Final exam.

Validity of bonus points:

Bonus points are valid under one academic year (including the re-exam period).

One can participate only in one seminar series per year.

Re-registered students:

If you have been registered for this course before and plan to attend it again, make sure that you are registered for this year's course.

Extended examination time:

If you have a right for extended examination time, please tell this to the assistant. There is a possibility for you to get extra 10 minutes for the test. Make sure that you have submitted all the corresponding documents to FUNKA, so that we have this information in the lists.
