Seminar Period 4 - Industry Field Trips

During this period Year 1 students will organize and go on visits to relevant companies in the Stockholm area. Year 2 students will be very welcome to join in the visits if they are interested and there is space. (Note: Year 2 students have completed all the mandatory assignments for DD2301 so you do not have to participate in this activity.) Unfortunately, it has been somewhat to get companies to participate this year. If you have a good contact at a company based in Stockholm that you think would be interested in hosting a visit and would be of interest to the class, please contact me.

Some multi-stage organization will be required so this is the general plan:

(Many students will be involved in organizing a visit and everybody must go on at least one visit, hence you have to make multiple selections and also not all the companies on the list are guaranteed to participate this year.) 

     Deadline:  March 27, 2023 midday

  • Stage 2 - I will make random organizing groups ( covering some of the class but not all.)  that will be responsible for organizing the visit to a particular company and then give each organizing group the contact details to their company.  
    Deadline: March 28, 2023

  • Stage 3 - Groups organize the visit with the company and set up "Canvas" group pages to provide details of the visit and allow students to sign-up for the visit. (If there are fewer places than sign-ups then each member of the organizing group is assured a place and a random selection, with Year 1 having priority over Year 2 students, will be made afterwards following confirmation of who can make the visit etc...)  
    Deadline:  .. for the group to make the initial contact with the company. (After this it may take some time as some companies will be prompt in replying and others may not be so prompt.)

Written assignment

After the visit, write a short (100+ words) text about the visit, and your impressions of the company. You are of course encouraged to do so as soon as possible after the visit, but the hard deadline is June 1st 2023.

I will make these essays available to everyone after this date as the intended reader is another student on the programme, and the purpose of it is to share experiences with students who visited other companies. In this way, everyone can browse through the texts of other groups, and get an impression about all the companies involved.

You will have passed this part of the course when you have uploaded a short text about at least one company. If you participated in more than one visit, you do not have to write about all the visits visit - but it is of course helpful to other students if you do!

 

Replacement assignment

If you are abroad this semester, or if you for some reason were not able to go on a visit, you should complete the following assignment:

Complete a (800-1200) word essay describing which job in a particular sector you would like to have (with some sort of realism) after your studies and why? Are you aiming for interesting work using the skills you acquired during your studies here, financial security, making a difference in a particular sector, nice environment, good work life/balance, location etc and which of these factors are you willing to compromise on and those which you are not willing to do so.
