Information on final exam
Final Exam, Monday 11 Jan 8:00 am-1:15 pm (5 hours + 15 extra minutes).
(FUNKA students with R1 tag will be given additional 2.5 hours)
Exam problems: Five questions, each carrying eight points. The corresponding topics for the five problems are: (1) Electrostatics; (2) Magnetostatics; (3) EM wave; (4) Arbitrary among the above three; (5) Arbitrary also.
What are allowed:
- Textbook/Compendium (can be printed, A4 size);
- Calculator;
- Formula sheet (given);
- A mathematics or physics handbook;
- Digital equipment (such as computer or equivalent) can be used for displaying exam problems in PDF format. The same equipment can be used for displaying the English compendium.
- Internet access can only be used for downloading exam problems and uploading your solutions.
Note: No heavy writing on all materials (except simple markings and short explanatory texts). Use the latest compendium if possible; or, view the change log.
Points calculation: Points you get for the first three problems can be respectively replaced, in your favour, with the points you got in the pre-exam, which you did under December 2020. A minimum of 24 points is required to pass the course. For example, if you get full (8) points for question 1 in the pre-exam, you can skip answering question 1 in the final exam. In another scenario, if you get 4 points for question 1 in pre-exam and you are not satisfied with it, you can choose to work out question 1 in the final exam; your final points for question 1 will be the points from your best attempt from the two.
Form of examination: Online via Canvas. The exam problems will be released at 8 am sharp in your Canvas account. You write your answers on standard A4 papers or standard KTH exam answer sheets (download here) which you can print in advance if you have access to printers. Write your name, personal number, and page number on each answer sheet. Scan or photograph with your mobile phone of the answer sheets. See "Submission" below for technical details. An extra 15 minutes is given for your file uploading process. No ZOOM monitoring will be carried out.
ID control: You take a picture which contains your face, your ID card, and one-page answer sheet with your writing. Include this picture into your final submission.
Submission (file format): Use either scanner or mobile phone to get images. Use common image types (JPG, PNG, HEIC etc) or PDF. You need to ensure that resolution is high enough such that your writing is distinguishable. BUT DO NOT UPLOAD EXCESSIVELY LARGE FILES. I did a test: a good quality photo of a A4 page with handwritten text with my iPhone at 3000x4000 pixels has a size of 900 kByte. Keep below this file size for each page if possible. Keep your original answer sheets in a safe place (we may not need them but just in case). Upload a single ZIP or PDF file, including the ID control picture. Name the file with "SK1118_LastName_FirstName.ZIP/PDF".
Recommended writing style (!): Motivate choice of a formula. You may not be given full points if there is lack of such argument, even though the formula and results are correct. Answers to the problems should be expressed in number with unit if applicable. Calculation steps should be logically clear. Only a numerical value without intermediate steps, even if it happens to be right, will be given no points.
After exam: The result will be published the latest 3 weeks (or 15 work days) after the exam. If you think there is mistake in correction and want a re-correction, you write to kursexp@physics.kth.se. From there you will get a form to fill, explaining the problem. A follow-up decision will be made afterwards by the examiner.
