Project Information

Documents about the project:

Documents describing the project, the proposal and the written report:

  • ProjectProposalInstructions.pdf Download ProjectProposalInstructions.pdf - instructions about what information should be included in your  project proposal.
  • ProjectAssessment.pdf Download ProjectAssessment.pdf - details about how the project will be examined and what material you need to produce for the project - TLDR: your group needs to produce a project report, video, peer-review and self assessment report and attend the Virtual Poster Session.
Number of bonus points required for grade bump: 12,
Max number of bonus points on offer: 16 if complete A3 option 1 and 17 if you complete A3 option 2
  • ProjectType.pdf Download ProjectType.pdf -  describes the default projects and some ideas for custom projects.
Note I may make some slight changes to the extensions of the default projects to help clarify a little how much work is needed for a higher grade (the clarification will be along the lines:  exploring one extension in depth could be considered somewhat equivalent to exploring many extensions superficially!).
Just for clarification when I say  "
implement from scratch" in this document I mean with a deep learning framework like Tensorflow, PyTorch etc.  ( The assignments are more than enough practice of coding hand computed gradients!
  • ProjectAdvice.pdf Download ProjectAdvice.pdf - some notes I adapted from another deep learning course as I thought they would be useful to you.
  • Template for the project report: NeurIPs 2021 template (Links to an external site.)  (6 page limit in this format, excluding references).  If you prefer a two-column format then you can use the CVPR template available at  http://cvpr2021.thecvf.com/node/33 (Links to an external site.)  (page limit in this format 4 pages excluding references).

Projects that groups completed in previous years

For reference and maybe some inspiration many of the project presentations from previous years are available here:

Virtual Poster Session: 27th May, 2022, 10:00

Time-table for the project material:

  1. May 24 - deadline for submission of project report
  2. June 1 - deadline for submission of peer review
  3. May 27 - Morning upload video presentation
  4. May 27 - Attend Virtual Poster Session  - answer questions about your project & ask a question about the project you have been asked to peer review from watching the video.
  5. June 2 - deadline for submission of self-assessment report

Conditions that must be fulfilled to be eligible to take part in the Virtual Poster Session:

Instructions on self-assessment report & peer-review:

Here is a document with the information we want you to include in the peer-review and the self-assessment report: PeerReview_SelfAssessmentInstructions.pdf Download PeerReview_SelfAssessmentInstructions.pdf

The format of the Virtual Poster Session will approximately be as follows.

Phase 1

  •  Will have a separate zoom meeting for ∼5-8 projects.
  •  Each project has ∼7-8 minutes to devoted to it with the following activities:
    •  Everyone in the zoom meeting watches the video presentation for the group
    • The project under review must answer questions from the group assigned to peer review their project.
    • Time permitting the other students in the zoom meeting can ask questions.
  •  When all projects have been viewed and discussed, the meeting can vote for the best project presentation. This project will move forward to phase 2.

Phase 2

In the next phase everybody gets to see the “best” video from each subset of projects.

  • Everybody watches the videos of the winning projects from phase 1.
  • The audience gets to ask questions.
  • All students get to vote for the project that should win the audience’s best project award

What do I do if my group misses the project report deadline or I do not fulfill the assignment eligibility criterion?

  1. Our group just missed the report deadline, but my report will be ready before the poster session. You must sort out with another late group if they are willing to peer review your report and vice-versa. If you manage to do this then inform me of the groups involved and I will let you join the poster session.
  2. There is zero chance our group will make this deadline. I will have another virtual poster session in September.  Mail me after May 27th if you want to take part in the "Poster Re-Exam" and I will poll the groups involved to find a suitable date. Note myself and the TAs will not be able to give you help with your projects after the course ends. (end of May)
  3. Some members of our group have completed >= 3 assignments before the eligibility deadline and others have not. What happens now? The members of the group that are eligible to participate in the Virtual Poster Session should take part. Those who are not should wait until the re-exam Poster Session. Those taking part in the re-exam poster session can use the same video, report and self-assessment report as used in the original poster session (as I assume everybody in the group contributed to the group project) but they will have to write a peer-review and self-assessment of their learning outcomes for the re-exam. Also to take part in the re-exam you should have completed >= 3 of the assignments.
