Scientific, social and ethical aspects of computer science, reflection document
Before you write your reflection you should do the preparations.
The written reflection
Write a reflection document where you address the following points based on your preparations and your experience and expectations. The document should be 500-800 words.
- If you were to work in the gaming industry you would be affected by the debate on video games, whether you like it or not. As an engineer, you could take different standpoints in a situation like this: ignore the controversy, follow it passively, perhaps adapting your products based on the debate, or even actively participate in the public debate. Reflect on the consequences for you personally, your company and society at large of the different standpoints.
- Computers have an enormous impact on society, today and in the future. Try to envision a modern Fritz Haber; a computer scientist, smart but with a lack of ethical perspective. Describe a scenario where this person could end up with a similar reputation.
- Looking back at your education, reflect on if and where you have learned how to relate to this kind of questions.
The document should be written as, or be converted to, a Google document. Set the permissions, so that everyone with the link will be allowed to comment the document. The following video shows how to do this:
If you do not want to use Google Docs for your text, there is an alternative described in the course memo.
Hand in the reflection
The link to your written reflection must be added to your group's Canvas page for this seminar before 19:00 on May 9. First, check that you are logged in to Canvas (in the blue Canvas menu to the left). You can find your group page by clicking Groups/Grupper in the blue Canvas menu to the left, choose your group (named prosamm group X), click on Pages/Sidor and the page named "period 4 2018/2019: Scientific, social and ethical aspects". Then edit this page, adding a line consisting of your name and course offering (prosamm18 or prosamm17) at the end of the document, and make this line link to your Google document by using the chain icon and entering the URL of the Google document. Then save the page. Be careful not to change or remove anything on the page that anyone else has written.
You will also need to read and comment on the other group members' reflections.
Fill in the evaluation questionnaire that will be emailed to you
In a few days you will get an email with a link to the questionnaire. The questions are about your perceptions of the program integrating course, your perceptions of the KTH classrooms, and, for second year students, an evaluation of your education. The questionnaire, which is mandatory and anonymous, should be filled in before May 16, at 23:59.
Have you missed anything in this course?
If you look at your results in Grades/Omdömen in Canvas you should have "1" for each of the three tasks for each seminar: reflection document, comments and seminar, in order to pass the course. If you missed anything you will need to read the instructions on how to fix this. If a result has not been reported correctly, you should contact your mentor for that seminar.
When you have "1" for each of the seminar tasks and have answered the mandatory questionnaire, you will get the Ladok component of the year (UPP1 for year 1 and UPP2 for year 2) reported.
