Set up notifications

Setting up your notifications correctly is important in order to stay up-to-date with that which is happening in your course, and not miss a deadline or other important information that can affect your engagement in the course. To manage the notification preferences of Canvas, follow the step by step guide below or jump to the video at the bottom for an audio-visual guide!

 

  • Step by step guide

Once you have logged in you will find a left side navigation menu with your Account, Dashboard, etc. 

  1. Click the first button, "Account". A small side window will open.
  2. Select "Notifications" if you want to edit the notifications for different elements of your courses, or "Settings" if you want to edit the ways you are contacted (email, mobile phone, etc.)

 

By selecting "Notifications":

You will be able to change the notifications you receive through email and/or push notifications for Course Activities, Discussions, Conversations, Scheduling, Groups, Conferences, and Alerts. To change how often you receive notifications for a specific category and contact method, click the corresponding notification icon. You can receive all notifications immediately, receive a daily or weekly summary, or turn notifications off completely.

By selecting "Settings":

You will be able to add additional contact information by using the Ways to Contact section. 

  • To add an email, click the Add Email Address link. Enter your email address in the provided field and click the Register Email button. After your email has been registered, you will receive a confirmation email. To complete registration, click the link provided in the email.
  • To add a mobile number for text notifications, click the Add Contact Method link. Text notifications are only available for Announcements and Grading notification types. To remove any contact method, click the Delete icon.
