Research Data Management - an overview

Key take aways

  • Data management starts early on in the research process.
  • Funders and publishers are increasing their requirements on research data management.
  • Research data management requires planning in order to share your data at a correct access level both during active research and when you publish your results.

Managing your data in a research project is important and establishing good data management has many advantages. In this introductory video you can see how data management plays an important role early on in the research process and throughout the resaerch data life cycle.

An introduction to data management and the research data life cycle is given in the video below:

In this part of the course on research data management we will go through important considerations in the different stages of the research data life cycle: from planning to active research, publishing your data and considerations for re-using data in the active research phase.

Starting early on with planning for data management makes it easier to manage data in a structured way during active research. Consistent file naming conventions, keeping your data in good order and documenting how you process data already from start could make the research process more efficient, especially in larger projects managing large or complex datasets, as well as making it easier for others to understand how the research was performed. This increases transparency and reproducibility and simplifies sharing your data when you publish your results.

Funding agencies increasingly require research data to be made accessible according to the FAIR-principles, which you will learn about on the next page.
