Lecture 12 - System thinking – the waste crisis in Naples

System thinking – the waste crisis in Naples

The structure of the class is around 45 minutes of lecture/instruction followed by a 20 minutes group discussion on the readings and 45 minutes to develop a causal loop diagram (CLD) by the groups. The rest of the time is allocated to present and discuss the CLDs.

Most activities in the class will be based on your readings. Therefore, it is VERY IMPORTANT to be prepared in class.

There are two required readings as follows:

1. Download D’Alisa, G., Burgalassi, D., Healy, H. and Walter, M., 2010. Conflict in Campania: Waste emergency or crisis of democracy. Ecological Economics, 70(2), pp.239-249

.

2. Download Greyl, L., Vegni, S., Natalicchio, M., Cure, S. and Ferretti, J., 2013. The waste crisis in Campania, Italy. Ecological economics from the ground Up, pp.273-308.

Prepare a list of parameters/variables/terms based on the above reading: (i) the problems of waste management addressed in the article you read, (ii) causes of the problems and (iii) consequences of the problems, and (iv) solutions of the problems (at least 3 on each and total: 3x4=12). You are encouraged to read other literature on waste management and biotechnology in order to prepare the list of parameters.
