COVID-19 Special Project

A sufficient number of you expressed interest on working on the COVID-19 x-ray dataset to proceed. This dataset is flawed as it actually has a very small test set with the COVID-19 label and the training set is quite imbalanced and there may be some biases. However, these flaws are common in many datasets so this can be seen as a learning opportunity. It also means it is closer to solving problems in the real world and also that you may have to extend yourself and ideas beyond basic training. Hopefully as time goes on more images will be released publicly. As an insurance though there is a huge dataset of labelled chest x-ray images (labels scrapped from radiology reports so they have some noise) available at NIH Chest X-ray Dataset Länkar till en extern sida. so this could supplement and/or replace the COVID-19 dataset if it turns out it is too flawed.

We will help facilitate groups working in the following ways, however, as time goes on we would like our involvement to be minimal with organizing the coordination between groups etc.

  • We will allow groups who are working on the COVID-19 to have collaborations to help them coordinate their work and share information and perhaps trained models. Remember though every group still has to produce their own report and the experiment they ran etc...
  • We have created a GoogleDoc with some high-level project ideas. Available here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_gJHtIOxS0HoD5-8Pp9MXp3bA6Nm2rr_7jEXoVtlnCc/edit?usp=sharing Länkar till en extern sida. You are, of course, allowed to pursue your own ideas and interest within this project area. The list is somewhat uncurated as at the moment speed as oppose to perfection is most important.
  • We began a ``Diagnosis of COVID-19 with AI - resources on the web Länkar till en extern sida." GoogleDoc which hopefully you the students can add to and take charge of. I will add things if I come across anything interesting and relevant.
  • In the help session slot on Thursdays either myself or a TA will chair a brief online meeting of all the groups working on COVID-19. Perhaps later on this formal structure may not be needed and you will self-organize. The first meeting which I will chair will be tomorrow (April 2)  at 13:00-13:45. I will mail the zoom link to the groups who fill in the form below.

What we need from you now:

A note from Sofia
Perhaps this can serve as inspiration for the groups (and/or be informative!), available for live streaming this afternoon:
April 15th 13.30-16.00 online workshop "ELLIS against Covid-19" https://ellis.eu/en/covid-19/events/ellis-against-covid-19-15-04-2020 Länkar till en extern sida.
"...Online workshop, presenting projects on how to tackle Covid-19 using methods of machine learning and AI, carried out by leading international researchers. Research topics include outbreak prediction, epidemiological modelling, drug development, viral and host genome sequencing, and health care management."
