Structuring a research project

Questions

 

  1. State a research question. It may concern any aspect of CS, such as programming, hardware, education, algorithms etc.  
  2. Find two peer reviewed papers that seem to be relevant to this research.
  3. Formulate a hypothesis.
  4. Then operationalize your hypothesis.
  5. Suggest an experiment to test your hypothesis. Note that an experiment does not test the hypothesis itself but some outcome that can be deduced from it (HD-method).
  6. If you were to conduct the actual experiment, some preparation would probably be appropriate, such as studying the literature or consulting experts. What would be needed in your experiment?  
  7. Should Computer Scientists Experiment More? by W. Tichy lists sixteen objections to experimenting. Read the paper and see if any of the objections applies to your experiment.

You will be asked to review the homework of three other students. Your own solution will also be reviewed in this way.
