1. Here are five excerpts from papers you have read in this course. Most (but not all) of these contain arguments. Identify the premise P and conclusion C in the arguments.

• ”The criterion of falsifiability is a solution to this problem of demarcation, for it says that statements or systems of statements, in order to be ranked as scientific, must be capable of conflicting with possible, or conceivable, observations.” (Popper)
• ”Interestingly, the software industry is beginning to value experiments, because results may give a company a three- to five-year lead over the competition.” (Tichy)
• ”Because articles contain so much information, it may be difficult to distinguish the main points of an article from the subordinate points.” (Purugganan et al.)
• ”The objection that computing is not a science because it studies man-made objects (technologies) is a red herring.” (Denning)
• ”The clinical trial would be unethical and possibly illegal in the US and other industrialized nations because AZT is a standard treatment for HIV/AIDS in these countries.” (Resnik)
