Residential Gateways
Residential Gateways
A very important aspect of such gateways is provisioning them, for example via the Broadband Forum’s CPE WAN Protocol, TR-069 standard. This enables the operators to control the boxes, perform updates, set the device’s configuration, etc. This protocol is based upon SOAP over HTTP.
Provisioning is very important when an operator my have 105 to 107 devices installed at their customers premises.

[slide526] One problem is scaling them up and provisioning them. Operators often have hundreds of thousands or millions of these devices to manage. How do you actually manage them all? And that becomes a monumental task, particularly when you start doing things like rolling out new releases of software, because you don't want to roll out a release and have 100,000 customers who are all upset with you, certainly not all at the same time.
