[slide480] So what did people start doing? They introducing application policy servers. So now we could talk to the entities responsible for controlling the different devices in the network, and we could tell them, here's what I want you to do. So for this traffic, here's how you should treat it. So for instance, I might set up RSVP for some of my traffic through the network. For others, I might not. I need to, of course, keep track of that. I need to have a set of policies. I need to be able to collect data about it, et cetera. So we start to get very, very detailed in our control of our various media, down potentially to even changing what our MAC is doing.
