Local Number Portability
Local Number Portability
In the PSTN this means a complex set of lookups for the number, since the number is no longer tied to an exchange.
In SIP the portability occurs because of the lookup of name@domain, which can be mapped to where ever the user wants this mapped to! (i.e., fully qualified domain names are unique, but are not tied to an underlying network address -- it is the name to address mapping which establishes this mapping and it is always dynamic).
For some considerations of tel URIs and number portability see RFC 4694 and RFC 3482.
For some additional information regarding number portability and the availability of sufficient numbers for all of the entities (people, terminals, “things”, etc.) see [Strålmark 2007] [Strålmark 2009], [PTS2009], [PTS2008], [Strålmark 2008], [Florenteng 2004].

[slide240] There's local number portability. We just talked about that. The key here was everyone knows why number portability was so important. So you're not bound to your operator. Before you were bound to your phone number and the operator owned you phone number. And if you wanted to switch to a new operator, then had to get a new phone number and you'd have to give out that phone number to everybody. With number portability you got to switch operators but now you could keep your phone number. The problem is that broke the binding, because that number was no longer a subtree in the graph of numbers. So how do we do that? We need to have a method for portability. And we will take a very short, one minute break here.
