The KTH Guide to scientific writing is intended to help writers at KTH (and beyond) create clear, reader-friendly text, using examples from typical KTH writing. It has emerged from the many discussions that have taken place among lecturers in Language and Communication and students regarding four main areas:

sentence structure
text flow
punctuation
scientific style.

The Guide provides information on what is generally considered to be acceptable or effective in scientific writing, but it also deals with areas which are less straightforward, where there is, for example, some doubt, or room for individual choice. The guide aims to help you make more informed choices regarding language, information structure and conventions in scientific writing. It also allows you to explore your own preferences and thus develop your own ‘academic voice’.

To prepare for Session 2

On the course Writing Scientific Articles, lecturers will often refer to the Guide, so it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with it. A good way to do this is to ‘click around’ the Guide and make brief notes in preparation for a discussion with others next week. You should consider:

What can you find in the KTH Guide that reflects your current practice as a writer?
What can you find in the KTH Guide that you think might help you improve your writing?
What can you find in the KTH Guide that surprises you, or appears to contradict your instincts or something you heard in the past?
What would you like to see changed in the KTH Guide or added to the guide in order to support you in your writing?

Be prepared to discuss these points in class.
